GUNNAR’S ICELANDIC HOT DOGS
And the winner, for best hot dogs of the Wet Hot Wiener Summer goes to... Gunnar’s Icelandic Hot Dogs @gunnarshotdogs out of Portland, Maine!
Holy shit ladies and gentlemen, we made it; and look at these stunning dogs! From before we left for Maine to now, I've spent the last 2 months absolutely AMPED about these Icelandic hot dogs.
I'll start by saying Gunnar's is setting the bar, and it's pretty fuckin' high. We all eat with our eyes first, and baby, these dogs are dressed to kill. I want to make an aside here to appreciate the setup; it's a tiny little hot dog cart towed on a hitch, it's got a hot bath, a butter wheel for the buns, a flattop to toast and sear, and just enough room to assemble the presentation. It's a one man operation and well oiled, the operation not the man. A cohesive design language from the cart, to his website, to even having custom made paper to place the dogs in. I'm a stan.
So the look is flawless, and the presentation is perfected, but what about the hot dogs? The wieners he serves are a special blend of lamb, pork, beef, and GIRTHY. The buns are top-sliced brioche, buttered, and toasted. There are two main options on the menu so I got both:
1. The One With Everything - comes with Apple Ketchup, Red Onion, Icelandic Remoulade, Pylsusinnep, and Cronions (crunchy onions).
2. Dave's HOT Dog - Ruby Red Horseradish Spread, Mayo, and Dill.
I'm grabbing you by the collar and telling you, these are the hot dogs you leave your beautiful family for. The perfect toast on the bun, the flavorful wiener, the family recipe horseradish spread, the presentation, everything... I wasn't making love to them, they were having their way with ME!
7/7 1-800-SEXY-HOT Dogs for BOTH! Dave's was my favorite tho, I went back for another and asked for extra horseradish spread. Does anyone have a cigarette?
